In a three-year comparative examination on integrated and ecological management systems it was found that the development of ecological wine production necessitates developments in integrated vine production, too. Both management forms require a high degree of professional knowledge and accurate observations in the vineyard. The choice of growing site, stock, variety, vine cultivation method, soil cultivation, fertilisation and plant protection must be treated as part of an integrated system aimed at yield and quality, and not as separate factors. It is true that in ecological vine cultivation the yield and quality are less stable and wine production is more expensive at present, but in the interests of environmental protection and the retention of constant soil fertility, ecological and economic aspects must be given equal priority in future vine production.
