Production of traditional rice is slow and decreasing due to the introduction of many high yielding rice varieties. In Benguet, traditional rice is still preferred by the people because of its aroma, good eating quality, minimum input and management, adaptability to the locality, stable yield and use in traditional practices. Evaluation and selection is the first step in the identification of heirloom rice for Benguet. Information on the performance of traditional rice varieties, however, is scarce; hence, the need to evaluate and finally recommend the best variety under local condition. The study was conducted to: evaluate the yield and other agro-morphological characters of glutinous traditional rice cultivars; document farmers' criteria in cultivar selection: determine the agronomic characters significantly correlated with yield, and select and recommend the best traditional rice cultivars for wet season cropping in Benguet. Glutinous and non-glutinous traditional rice cultivars collected from Benguet provinces were evaluated during the wet season in three rice producing areas of Benguet (Bineng, La Trinidad; Beleng-belis, Kapangan and Palina, Kibungan). Among the glutinous rice cultivars, Bayabas and Lablabi were the best performers based on yield. These cultivars were selected by the farmers. For the non-glutinous rice cultivars, the best performer was Sapaw having produced the highest yield. Sapaw was also selected by the farmers. The farmers' criteria in selecting a cultivar for wet season cropping were early maturity, high tillering ability, high yield and high production tillers. Number of filled grains was positively correlated with 1000 grain weight in glutinous rice cultivars. For non-glutinous rice cultivars, days from tillering to booting had positive correlation with yield.
