This is an attempt to develop improved breeding populations and cultivars for five different kinds of maize: sweet, glutinous, pop, quality protein maize (with high lysine and tryptophan) and high starch. In all of those, the Cereals Breeding Program has previously developed some breeding lines and populations but with this Project, improvement of those materials and hybridization with those coming from different sources were intensified. Most notable accomplishment was the development of white qpm which later was released commercially as IPB Var6 and is now adopted by the Department of Agriculture in its white corn program. For the other types, the Project was able to a number of genetic materials (populations and hybrids) which could lead to more productive cultivars. Some of those have even been fielded in the national cooperative test of the National Seed Industry Council. In terms of genetic variability and mean performance, most was accomplished in qpm. Next would be glutinous, then sweet. Not much was developed in popcorn and high starch. The variability in glutinous corn materials would be very handy as we try to develop cultivars that have big grains and are high yielding-the type asked for by the cornik manufacturers. For sweet corn, we have hundreds of inbred lines to choose from to develop hybrids which would have high general quality acceptability and are tolerant to common field diseases. The demand for popcorn is not that much but we have available now newly developed populations and inbred lines to meet possible demand niche. We have also established in our existing inbreds and hybrids, there are materials which are already high in starch. Much has been done but much more needs to be done.
