To attain the coveted rice self-sufficiency goal of the country, there is a need to address location-specific concerns in rice farming. Thus, PhilRice implemented the Location-Specific Technology Development (LSTD) Program in 2010 DS [dry season] to serve both as a participatory research and extension modality. The LSTD Program used PalayCheck (an approach which follows the rice integrated crop management principle) as its technological platform. A localized or customized PalayCheck will be developed to suit local conditions. Moreover, on-farm variety trials were conducted on three newly released varieties against two popular farmer varieties using PalayCheck. The objectives of the study are as follows: 1) to identify the adoption rate of KeyChecks in Bulacan [Philippines]; 2) to understand the effect of adopting the PalayCheck in Bulacan; 3) to assess the cost of investment in adopting the PalayCheck in Bulacan. Bulacan is one of the 27 provinces in which the LSTD Program was implemented. With LGU [local government unit] assistance, the program was simultaneously established in nine LSTD sites in municipalities of Plaridel, San Miguel, and San Ildefonso. A survey and monitoring activity was conducted among 100 farmer cooperators across the sites. Results show that 17% of the farmer participants achieved eight KeyChecks while the majority achieved seven and six KeyChecks (45% and 32%). Among the 8 keychecks of PalayCheck, Keycheck no. 4 was the most adopted 100%, while Keycheck no. 7 was the least adopted 37%, 2010 DS cropping showed that farmers who adopted eight Keychecks had an average grain yield of 5.99 t/ha and an average net profit of Php 29,915.10 per hectare. Farmers who adopted seven and six KeyChecks had an average grain yield of 5.33 t/ha and 5.2 t/ha with an average net profit of Php 28,692.06, and Php 25,904.86, respectively. Hence, the more KeyCheck adopted, the yield and net profit also increases.
