Parasitism is a primary cause of production losses in livestock all over the world. In order to asses the rate of gastrointestinal parasitism in Ragusa Province (latitude 36deg 92 min, longitude 14 deg 76 min), Eastern Sicily (Italy), a coprological survey was performed on 365 dairy calves, with centrifugal flotation method (ParasiTrap Flotation PLUS, Big animals – Biospear). Coccidian oocysts and strongyles eggs were detected in 42 (11.51%) and 29 (7.95%) faecal samples, respectively. Cestoda infestations were found in only 3 (0.82%) animals. Our results suggest that environmentally resistant oocysts and eggs of parasites could occur in relatively low rate at the farms examined, probably due to an acceptable management by the farmers. The kit used for coprological examination is safe, hygienic, easy and simple to use.
