The subject of this study was to analyze the positioning of the role of rural development of Serbia in the concept of local economic development. The problems of rural areas in Serbia, because of its complexity and longevity, require the application of integrated approaches to solve, and one of them is the local economic development. Case of local economic development is significant because of the fact that the actors themselves in case of local area are best acquainted with the problems and all possible resources for their solution. By applying both concepts, it was created a desirable scenario for rural areas and agriculture of the Republic of Serbia, which includes increasing the competitiveness, economic growth, employment and quality of life. Particular attention is paid to the work aspects of agricultural production, the Republic of Serbia, having in mind that it is still dominant activity in rural areas. Using statistical, graphical and tabular views presented are important indicators relating to agriculture in the transition period for considering the current state of this branch of industry, and the possible directions in the production that enable better performance on the basis of the available terms. Existing resources in rural areas are under-used, the comparative advantages that we need to transform into a competitive advantage through the implementation of measures of agricultural and rural policy, with respect to local economic development.
