The dry period is generally considered as the key period for successful subsequent lactation. Most of the farmers understand the dry period as period when the cow is resting and is non productive. The consequence is that the cow does no receive the attention she needs. The increased needs of the high yielding animals, in the dry period, require careful monitoring and adequate support by the veterinarians within the Herd Health and Production Management program. The role of the veterinary practitioners should be focused on the implementation of measures for optimization of the dry-off process, udder health control and nutrition as well as other procedures that will help maintains increased production and health in the subsequent lactation.
