Latvia - Municipal Solid Waste Management Project : Getlini waste disposal site remediation and upgrading environmental assessment
Environmental Resources Management
One of the objectives of the Municipal Solid Waste Management Project is to remediate environmental pollution and modernize the Getlini landfill site to international good practice standards. The purpose of this environmental assessment is to identify the potential environmental impacts which may result from the proposed remediation and extension of the existing Getlini landfill site, to assess their significance and to identify mitigation measures. Leachate, which is produced directly from liquid waste and refuse moisture content, will be arrested, collected, and treated. Surface runoff from waste pile, which is a source of water pollution, will be directed to surface ditches and treated prior to discharge to the Daugava. A study of water quality, pollutant loadings, and hydrodynamics will be conducted to minimize the potential of adverse impacts on water quality in the Daugava. Road maintenance and regular sweeping can minimize dust emissions from landfill operation. Noise generated from construction and operation of the landfill site will be monitored, and a noise action plan will be prepared. Air quality impacts from waste haulage vehicles can be mitigated by proper maintenance of the vehicles.
