Biodiversity conservation in the Russian Federation

This report provides an overview of the current status of biodiversity in Russia and its conservation, and outlines some of the measures needed to sustain its biodiversity over the long term. these measures include strengthening protected areas. This report in essence summarizes reports developed during the preparatory phase of the Global Environment Facility's (GEF) Russian Biodiversity Project. Chapter 1 briefly describes current practice on biodiversity conservation in Russia. Chapter 2 gives a review of findings from the project's biodiversity gap analysis study. Detailed descriptions of ecosystems, faunal and floral regions and subregions, and an overview of national biodiversity are provided. Also included is an analysis of biodiversity within the country's protected area system and the identification of ecosystems currently under-represented by the system. Chapter 3 describes the Nationally Protected Territories in the Russian Federation along with an analysis of legislative, management, and other current issues relevant to protected areas planning and management. Chapter 4 summarizes the impacts of past and present socioeconomic policy on ecosystems and natural habitats. Finally, Chapter 5 proposes working solutions that have been prepared by the Russian participants in the project.
