Kiribati - Economic developments, issues and prospects
Yenny, Jacques | Uy, Lily
Like many small island economies, Kiribati is remote from world markets, and has a narrow productive base and a small domestic market. This report examines the structure of the economy; namely, it's resource endowments and constraints, the composition of economic activity, the institutional framework and the social setting. Recent macroeconomic and sectoral developments are reviewed, together with with an appraisal of government economic and financial policies. Looking to the future, the economy's development and diversification possibilities are assessed and it's medium-term growth and balance of payments prospects examined. In this context, the discussion focuses on major issues of development strategy, macroeconomic management, and the problems and opportunities in key sectors.
