Problems of an industrial economy with intensive agricultural production in the German Democratic Republic

The long term development of industrial and agricultural production in the GDR is discussed. Factors affecting the balanced development of both sectors are reviewed: the political and social relations between urban and rural worker; the relationship between industrial and agricultural production in terms of inputs provided and outputs produced and use by both, and their use of labour and resources; the increasing growth in income of GDR farmers and food price support (the largest economic redistribution of benefits carried out by the government) to ensure food supplies to all population groups; and the role of science and technology in improving quality and quantity of agricultural production and economic efficiency and in changing the relationship between crop and livestock outputs in terms of sector growth rates and proportional share of total output. Future tasks are to raise labour efficiency, decrease energy consumption, rationalize and modernize the agricultural sector, reduce agricultural losses and improve food processing. c CAB International
