This book examines how 12 African nations are meeting this challenge of regulating the conservation, use, and exchange of genetic resources. It also provides a resource for nations to develop a common policy framework.The paper provides a historical overview of the situation, leading on to a discussion of emerging African perspectives on the importance of genetic resources and both African and international frameworks for access and benefit sharing. An examination of the 12 country case studies follows. The paper then discusses, at length, the two major regional and subregional initiatives in Africa relating to genetic resources:African Model Law on the Protection of the Rights of Local Communities, Farmers and Breeders, and for the Regulation of Access to Biological ResourcesAccess and Benefit Sharing of the Biological and Genetic Resources in the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
