Indigenous technical knowledge in animal husbandry

This paper reports on a study of Indigenous Technical Knowledge (ITK) in animal husbandry within India, in order to document practices and knowledge before possible extinction. The author carried out fieldwork in West Bengal, consisting of interviews with a variety of farmers in selected areas as to ascertain the prevalence and understanding of ITK.The paper reports the main finding, including:the documented ITKs in the study area showed the richness of the time-tested traditional knowledge applied to animal husbandrythough all the ITKs have been found valid and effective as per the observations made by the farmers, they need to be validated scientifically and experimentally along with the identification and isolation of active ingredient present in the material usedITK is cheaper, locally and easily available even in remote areas, having lesser side effectssimilar studies have to be conducted in other parts of the country where indigenous technical practices are followed so as to pool all the ITK practices in Indiathe documented indigenous practices can be taken up by different institutions and departments, to test the validity in the laboratory.[adapted from author]
