China Africa in agriculture: a background paper on trade, investment and aid in agriculture

This paper investigates China-Africa exchanges in agriculture, which is a relatively small component of the China-Africa trade. After a brief introduction to Chinese and African agriculture, the first part of the paper analyses Chinese and African trade and discusses two issues: Is Chinese demand and Africa supply complementary; and what could be the consequence of a transformation of Chinese consumption of domestic agricultural imports? The second part looks at Chinese aid to agriculture and the third part examines Chinese investment in African agriculture with special emphasis on investment in land.
