Burkina Faso: Organic cotton under threat from GM cotton
2011
I. Maiga
The number of farmers growing genetically modified cotton in Burkina Faso has risen sharply in recent years. Organic cotton production had been increasing, but the spread of GM cotton is now threatening to stop organic cotton in its tracks. Farmers do their best to avoid cross-contamination but with the majority of "conventional" cotton farmers now planting GM, it is becoming difficult to ensure purity. In some cases this affects women as they can no longer plant small areas of organic cotton next to a man's large area of GM cotton.
