Biotechnology, trade and commercial export risks in the COMESA/ ASARECA Region

The rapid development and diffusion of biotechnology and in particular genetic engineering is happening at a time when the African continent is faced with a number of daunting challenges including declining agricultural productivity and increasing poverty. This four page document outlines a study into how the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) and Association for Strengthening Agricultural Research in Eastern and Central Africa (ASARECA) should approach biotechnology. <br /><br />Recommendations include: most stakeholders interviewed have mixed perceptions about biotechnology and believe it should be dismissed outright many stakeholders are of the opinion that the level of risks associated with GM are high there is overall inadequate capacity in most of the countries identified as potential GM growers, both in terms of human resources and laboratory equipment <br />
