The tissue cyst-forming coccidium Toxoplasma gondii is a one of teh more polyxenous known to date. It has a facultatively heteroxenus life cycle and can probably infect all warm blooded animals (mammals and birds) and humans. T. gondii is prevalent in most areas of the world and is of veterinary and medical importance, because it may cause abortion or congenital diseases in its intermediate hosts. In the present study recent diagnostic methods were used to determine the distribution and prevalence of T. gondii in animals of different species. Study was performed form 2008 to 2012 in Latvia and in spring 2011 in Finland. The seroprevelance of T. gondii specific antibodies in definitive hosts, as domestic cats and Eurasian lynx were 51.6% and 86.1%, respectively. However, only 2% of cats and none of lynx were excreting oocysts. In meat producing animals, like domestic pigs and wild boars, the seroprevalence of T. gondii antibodies were 4.2% and 33.2%, respectively. The prevalence varied in different farming systems for both animals.
