The Location Specific Technology Development (LSTD) Program aims to identify and develop site specific rice farming technologies and practices in target areas with yields below 3.8 t/ha (irrigated) 2.5 t/ha (rainfed), with the in view of increasing technology awareness of farmers and extension workers. Barangays [villages] San Antonio and Moriones are two such areas in Ocampo, Camarines Sur, where LSTD was pilot tested in 2010 DS [dry season] and WS [wet season]. Focus group discussion (FGD) results indicated key production constraints such as lack of supply- and on-use of quality seeds, asynchoronous planting, high seeding rate (120-150 kg/ha), limiting soil nutrients and occurrence of pests and diseases. While farmers generally achieved 5 KeyChecks (KC) (i.e. 2, 4, 6, 7, and 8), majority were not able to achieve KC1, 3 and 5. Financial constraints were the most common cited reason. Overall observations on keychecks achieved strongly indicate that these farmers that achieved the most number of KCs, also attained higher yields. While varietal adaptability trial result showed that NSIC Rc158, M2000 (a local farmer's variety), and NSIC Rc152 as the top 3 most preferred varieties by farmers because of their high yield performance, moderate tolerance to Rice Tungro Virus (RTV), and bacterial diseases. Most common soil nutrient problems identified were N, P, and NPK deficiency combination, which were partly attributed to the improper management of rice biomass such as rice straw which they burned in the fields before land preparation. Six best recommended practices and other relevant findings that helped increase yield were also listed and discussed.
