The swing-type coconut husk decorticator was designed and fabricated. Its performance was tested and evaluated. The study was conducted using the Response Surface Methodology to determine the optimum mechanism for decorticating coconut husk for efficient fiber extraction. The factors studied were clearance, number of louver and speed of decortication. Analysis of variance showed that all independent variable significantly affected dependent variables. Second degree polynomial model was generated for decortication of retted and unretted coconut husks. Analysis of variance in both dry and wet coconut decorticating tests revealed that the number of louver was the most important factor affecting the loading and decorticating efficiency, fiber recovery, decorticating efficiency and power. On the other hand, the speed and clearance affected only the loading capacity, power and length of fiber. The results also revealed that tensile strength of the fiber was not significantly affected by any of these independent factors. Likewise, interaction among the independent variables influenced only the loading and decorticating capacity, and decorticating efficiency.
