Efficacy of different synthetic and natural products against mealybug Maconellicoccus hirustus in cotton

Efficacy of different natural products; tobacco (nicotine), neem oil, neem seed kernal extract, garlic extract and surfactant were compared to synthetic chemicals; commercial systemic insecticide (Curacron) of the organophosphate group, isopropyl alcohol, ethanol and alcohol in combination with surfactant at different concentrations at the Nuclear Institute for Agriculture (NIA) Tandojam during 2008-09. Based on the results, against Maconellicoccus hirustus in cotton, tobacco 2% solution and neem oil 1% solution among the natural products and insecticidal spray of Curacron double dose and recommended dose and alcohol + surfactant 10% solutions were found useful in suppressing the population ephemerally. However, the population was found to be restored within 7-10 days period after any treatment. The use of insecticide Curacron and natural product tobacco (nicotine) was found at par in term of mortality of the mealybug. However, the resurgence of the mealybug was found in similar trend in all the synthetic and natural products. More research is needed to calculate different doses of nicotine and the pest response towards nicotine in order to minimize nicotine resistance in mealybug. Moreover, further research is required to evaluate different natural and synthetic chemical treatment of this notorious pest.
