The grapevine is one of the major world crops with huge number of existing cultivars. However, while other worldwide mega crops such as wheat, rice, maize, even apple, are represented mainly with newly developed cultivars, grapevine cultivars present in modern production are in waste majority are very old ones mostly created by spontaneous hybridization and human selection centuries ago. In spite of hundreds years of cultivation and vegetative propagation an exact number of cultivars in the world, their origin, as well as their agronomic characteristics are not sufficiently known. Thus, grapevine germplasm evaluation and conservation is still contemporary task where in genotype identification an application of modern molecular genetics tools are playing an increasing role. In this paper we give an overview of research and achievements related to application of molecular identification tools in grapevine germplasm analysis with a special focus on germplasm of South East Europe region.
