The aim of this study was to measure ammonia and carbon dioxide concentration in a loose-housing system with cubicles and natural ventilation used for dairy cows. The barn was reconstructed. The layout of cubicles, stances and passes as well as ventilation was changed during the reconstruction of the barn. In addition, straw bedding in flat-bed cubicles used before the reconstruction was replaced by a solid part of separated slurry given into cubicles with a depressed bed. The concentration of ammonia and carbon dioxide, air temperature and relative humidity was measured before and after the reconstruction. The Photoacoustic Multi-gas Monitor system was used to measure gas concentrations. Due to the reconstruction, ammonia concentration was increased, and carbon dioxide concentration was reduced. Before the reconstruction, ammonia concentration ranged from 0.36 mg.m-3 to 1.85 mg.m-3 and carbon dioxide from 1283.6 mg.m-3 to 2987.5 mg.m-3 in dependence on the place of measurement. After the reconstruction, ammonia concentration varied from 1.26 mg.m-3 to 3.30 mg.m-3 and carbon dioxide from 821.48 mg.m-3 to 2573.5 mg.m-3.
