Effects of herbal powder composition on flow and compaction properties

This research aimed at investigating the effects of herbal powder composition prepared from various parts of medicinal plants including underground parts or rhizomes, leaves, fruits and stem on the compressibility and flowability of the powder, the essential properties for tablet formulation. Nineteen medicinal plants were selected from different parts, namely fruits of Phyllanthus emblica Linn., Solanum trilobatum Linn., Terminalia chebula Retz., Piper nigrum Linn. and Morinda citrifolia L., underground parts of Zingiber officinale Rosc., Curcuma longa Linn., Acorus calamus Linn., Eurycoma longifolia Jack. and Glycyrrhiza glabra Linn., leaves of Cassia angustifolia Vahl., Andrographis paniculata Wall. Ex Nees., Centella asiatica (L.) Urban., Pluchea indica (L.) Less. and Citrus hystrix DC., and stem of Tinospora crispa Miers., Cinnamomum verum J.S., Caesalpinia sappan Linn. and Derris scandens Benth. It was found that high fiber content was found in the stem and fruits than in other parts, the highest fiber content was found in Caesalpinia sappan Linn. (55.03+-0.05 percent), Terminalia chebula Retz. (31.17+-0.17 percent), Solanum trilobatum Linn. (30.28+-0.23 percent) and Derris scandens Benth. (30.17+-0.12 percent), respectively. Starch content found in underground parts was quantitatively more than that found in other parts, the highest starch content was found in Acorus calamus Linn. (44.45+-0.34 percent), Eurycoma longifolia Jack. (39.39+-0.69 percent), Zingiber officinale Rosc. (32.75+-0.65 percent) and Curcuma longa Linn. (31.38+-0.15 percent), respectively. Volatile oil content was found only in some plants. The herbal powder composition had the effect on the compaction property (p LT 0.05), but not on the flow property of the powder (p GT 0.05). As a whole, all herbal powder had the poor flowability and compressibility property. Thus, the wet granulation should be applied for tablet formulation of herbal powder.
