Safety control of strawberry fruits gray mold fungus by plant volatile oils

Antifungal activity of plant essential oils of Cymbopogon citrates L Lemongrass Cuminum cyminum L Cumin and Thymus capitatus L Thyme were tested against Botrytis cinerea the causal organism of strawberry fruits gray Results of the present study confirmed the antifungal activities of lemongrass and cumin essential oils in vitro against B cinerea fungal growth and in vivo on fruit gray mold which increase storage shelf life of strawberries by inhibition of fungal infection compared with control Significant increases were detected among firmness Firn and total soluble solids TSS of healthy and infected strawberries affected by the application of lemongrass and cumen essential oils The tested essential oils and its concentrations did not influence significantly the pH and electric conductivity EC values in strawberries This study suggests that both lemongrass and cumin essential oils have a potential effect as antifungal preservation for controlling of storage diseases of strawberry fruits
