Assiut University drinking water purification plant uses prechlorine drinking treatment processses the aim of this study was to assess the removal of cyanobacteria and microcystins during drinking water treatment processes as a comparison of two treatment lines with / without prechlorination was conducted. Microcystins level (intracellular and extracellular) were measured by ELISA (Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay). The data indicated that precblorination process was relatively more effective in removing cyanobacteria but without prechlormatlon proved more efficient m removing mlcrocystms. This paper for the first time presents results showing the presence of microcystin hepatotoxin in Assiut.
