2011
Abd El-Hafeez, R.A.
The Study aimed to shed light on some of the indicators that reflect the ability of society to achieve an appropriate degree of food security from major cereal crops. The study has depended upon many of the published and unpublished data, used many descriptive and quantitative analysis methods to reach its results. In this context, it was to shed light on the development of both production and consumption of wheat, corn, rice and its rates of change. Periods of the ability of domestic production, imports and surplus for exports has been estimated to meet consumption of these commodities. Finally, the study was able to estimate the size of the gap between production and consumption of goods subject of the study and determine the degree of self-sufficiency. In light of the estimates and indicators of the study, one can say that the policy of economic liberalization in the agricultural sector in Egypt, was not sufficient to achieve appropriate levels of food security in the goods of major cereals, which requires the need to search for additional procedures whereby the introduction of new economic resources, and the use of more advanced technology in the field of agricultural production in general, and in the production of cereals in particular, ensuring an increase of its production to reach the excess rates of consumption, with the trend at the same time to change consumption patterns of grain to be similar to those at the global level.
