For beech, the phenomena of kiln drying discoloration during wood drying at low temperature could be a chemical decomposition of extractives in the presence of oxygen; it is conditioned by the wood moisture content and the kiln drying parameters. The aim of this study is to determine the role of extractives and oxygen in the kiln drying discoloration of beech. The condensed tannins are precursor of kiln drying discoloration of beech. The oxygen susceptibility of condensed tannins, indicate that oxygen is involved in the kiln drying discoloration of beech. The postulated mechanism of kiln drying discoloration at low temperature of beech is that during the drying the catechin is transformed in quinona and polymerised in colored compounds by a chemical oxidation reaction controlled by the drying conditions.

Francés. La discoloration du hêtre au cours du séchage serait due à une réaction chimique d’oxydation des certains constituants extractibles (tanins). Cette étude a pour objectif de vérifier les conditions de séchage dans lesquelles ces discolorations se développent et de contribuer à l’identification des constituants du bois et des mécanismes à l’origine de cellesci. Des essais effectués sous atmosphère désoxygénée confirment que l’absence d’oxygène permet d’obtenir un bois de couleur claire. Il est également montré que des échantillons de bois dont on élimine une partie des extractibles ne présentent pas de discoloration au séchage. Il est mis en évidence que les tanins condensés présents dans le bois de hêtre peuvent, dans certaines conditions de température et d’humidité, être transformés par oxydation en composés colorés.
