The newest varieties developed at the State Stende Cereal Breeding Institute are winter wheat varieties ‘Fredis’, ‘Edvins’, ‘Talsis’ and ‘Modris’. The varieties are characterized by good winter hardiness and high yield potential. Grain quality is suitable mostly for food. Varieties ‘Fredis’ and ‘Edvins’ are awned, early, with moderate resistance to lodging and diseases. The variety ‘Fredis’ is registered in the Latvian and in the Estonian Plant Varieties Catalogue. In Lithuania the official representative for variety ‘Fredis’ is the seed company UBV ‘Žvalguva’. The variety ‘Edvins’ is registered in the Estonian Plant Varieties Catalogue since 09.12.2013. The varieties ‘Talsis’ and ‘Modris’ are moderate late varieties, intensive, with the yield potential of 8–10 t haE-1; they have moderate resistance to lodging and diseases. Variety ‘Talsis’ is under DUS test in Estonia, and it has had positive results from the first year. The variety ‘Modris’ will be prepared to DUS and VCU test starting from 2014. In 2013 the economically reasonable background of fertilization was founded for the earliest varieties ‘Fredis’ and ‘Edvins’ N-P-K 6-26-30 385 kg haE-1 + 36 kg K2O N130 (90 + 40), Medax Top 0.75 L haE-1, Viverdi 1.5 L haE-1 and Multiple 1.0 L haE-1, (variant 3), and for ‘Modris’ and ‘Talsis’ N-P-K 6-26-30, 460 kg haE-1 + 42 kg K2O, N170 (90 + 80), Medax Top 0.75 L haE-1, Viverdi 1.5 L haE-1 and Falkon Forte 0.75 L haE-1 variant 4).
