Sustainable development: what are the obstacles to its adoption as policy?

The idea of sustainable development encompasses a kind of puzzle. It challenges government and business leaders to eradicate poverty and to develop the world economies but to do so in a way that does not degrade the environment or plunder natural resources. Sustainable development is an appeal idea but also a very controversial one. It requires that natural resources be used by human society at a rate that can be continued over an indefinite period of time. Sustainable development is ".....a process of change in which the exploitation of resources, the direction of investment, the orientation of technological development...institutional change and the ability of the biosphere to absorb the effects of human activities are consistent with the future as well as present needs". The working paper is trying to identify the constraints and depict the means by which sustainable development can be implemented. Malaysia, as one of the New Industrialized Countries was suffering the environmental problems due of the aggressive development and the human activities in manufacturing, construction works etc. This paper does not deal with implementation per se. The focus is also about the economic development that must be accomplished sustainable that is, in a way that conserves the earth`s resources for future generations. Growth cannot accur at the expense of degrading the forests, water, and air that must continue to support life on this land. Lastly, the paper will be concentrating on the main idea of what are the obstacles to its adoption as policy.
