Overview and outlook for Chinese vegetable oil industry

Production China is one of the leading growers of oilseeds in the world. Major oilseeds produced and consumed in China are soybeans, rapeseed, Peanuts, sunflower seed and sesame seed, etc. In recent 20 years, China's oilseeds production achieves solid growth, increasing from 35.33 million tons in 1990 to 46 million tons in 2008, with an annual growth rate of 1.5%. The production of soybeans and Peanuts keep stable growth. For example, during 1998 to 2008, soybeans production maintained at 15 to 16 million tons, accounting for 35% of domestic oilseeds supply; Peanuts production maintained at 12 to 14 million tons, accounting for 31% of domestic oi/seeds production. The production of rapeseed kept steady growth, from 8.3 million tons in 1998 to 12.1 million tons in 2008, with an average annual growth rate of 3.1%, accounting for 26% of domestic oi/seeds production (Figure 1). Production of domestic edible vegetable oil has increased from 7 to 10 million tons during 1990 to 2008.
