Orchids in Switzerland: a practical case of conservation of the lady slipper

Orchids in Switzerland are not as showy as in Malaysia of course, but because a large part of the country consists of mountains and lakes and is practically untouched by humans, many orchids do flourish. Differences in altitude produces a large variety of habitats hosting some 66 different species gathered in 28 genera, that I will briefly describe. The Cypripedium calceolus is, of course, the best known, the most spectacular and the most endangered. Man is not always its main enemy, there are other predators that one would not think of - the chamois. For example. Orchids are a delicacy for them and have no chance to defend themselves. Chamois and orchids are both endangered and protected by law. What should we do? A recently created foundation named Fondation Orchidee whose goals are orchid conservation, chose an area for reintroduction where the Cypripedium calceolus disappeared due to the chamois, for re-introdruction. A systematic study of this project will be presented to you since an exchange of knowledge and experience may be very useful to everyone.
