Rescuing orchids in sinnamary valley (French Guiana)
2005
Chiron, G.R. | Bellona, R.
On 1 January, 1994, a hydroelectric dam began to inundate a 300 km area along the Sinnamary River (French Guiana), in a lowland tropical forest. In October 1993 and March-April 1994, the authors oversaw two expeditions of orchid amateurs, on the river, in order to collect epiphytic orchids, with two main goals: to rescue as many plants as possible- and to contribute to French Guiana orchid knowledge. Conditions for collecting and conserving more than 2000 orchids are first described. Appraisal of the results, in terms of conservation, eight years later, is discussed. Identification of concerned species, as the plants were flowering, allows us to present an up-to-date provisional checklist of orchids species for this area, with some species new for French Guiana.
