Individual plants of kikuyu (Pennisetum clandestinum), selected from two experiments which evaluated selections from mutagenetically-treated cv. Whittet, were sown as spaced plants to assess the variation in physical and chemical characteristics within kikuyu. Selections showed considerable variation, relative to the original cultivar from which they had been derived and from other cultivars of kikuyu. The variation between individual plants was even greater than that within selections. Some plants demonstrated both high yields and high quality, while others showed superior runner vigour but no super quality, over Whittet. Even from this limited evaluation of the mutagenic population produced from Whittet, there was a good chance of producing elite kikuyu lines which would show superior yield, vigorous runner growth and higher crude protein and digestibility and lower fibre levels in vigorous runner growth and higher crude protein and digestibility and lower fibre levels in foliage.
