Animal genetic resources: issues of management and utilization in Asia
2004
Chantalakhana, C. | Saithanoo, S.
Most of the indigenous animal genetic resources (AGR) in Asia are in the hand of smallholder farmers especially those who are engaged in mixed crop-animal systems. These AGR have not yet been fully utilized and some of them are under threat of inappropriate policies and practices. This paper discusses four areas of issues influencing the management and utilization of the indigenous AGR which are (1) government policies, (2) technical issues, (3) institutional constraints, and (4) social and traditional issues, with special reference to the situation in Southeast Asia. Some recommendations for sustainable use of AGR, including the need for assessment of AGR potentials, promotion of traditional animal sports and games, training for field personnel and key farmers, were suggested.
