The forest resources in the vicinity at Kumpulan Pengurusan Kayu-Kayan Terengganu (KPKKT) forest concession areas have been utilised for a long time by the local communities to meet household needs. These paper examines the impacts of KPKKT forest harvesting and utilisation on local employment, income and poverty.A socio economic survey was conducted on 146 respondent households in four villages near KPKKT in 1998. Of the total labor force of 269 working members in 146 households, 13% was engaged in activities inside KPKKT forest concession areas, i.e 10% rattan/gaharu harvester and 3% logging workers. Outside the KPKKT forest concession areas, of the total 269 labour force, 10% were sawmill workers and 2% KPKKT staff. In total, 25% of the local labour force was engaged in economic activities related to KPKKT. The average monthly household income in four villages was RM958 in 1998, which was lower than that of RM1,497 for all households in Terengganu in 1997. Of the average monthly household income in the four villages, 13% was derived directly from KPKKT forest concession areas, 11% from employment in sawmilling and 3% from employment in KPKKT. The incidence of poverty among the households in the four villages averaged 14% was in 1998, which was slightly lower than that of 17% among households in the state of Terengganu in 1997. This study also showed that the income received from sawmilling activities is important in eradicating poverty among local households.
