Preventive weeds management for corn production in the Kalinga upland: an extension program of Kalinga Apayao State College [Philippines]

The paper presents the results of the extension project in improving farmer's productivity and profitability through preventive weeds management. The project aimed to serve farmers by helping them understand problems through sharing knowledge, capacity building and teaching skills to tap institution for linkages. It was implemented in 5 sites with eight farmer-partners from 4 municipalities of Kalinga on 2007 and terminated in 2009 with 6 farmers' group involving 62 farmer-members. With constraints limiting corn production were addressed through partnership, capacity enhancement, capital sourcing, strengthening farmers' organization and sustainability. Corn yield increased by more than 1 ton/ha (3.5-4 tons to 4.71 to 6.35 tons/ha) and income increased to P15,000/ha during rainy season and P25,000/ha during dry season due to the adoption of preventive weeds management and used of high yielding crop from previous income and had reduced dependency on herbicide. Most of all, the bayanihan of farmers had reduced their capital needs. In conclusion, the project strategies and linkaging was of great help in increasing knowledge, productivity, capacity enhancement and sustainability having involved the farmer all throughout the program, resulting in higher income. The project also demonstrated that farmers are willing to take risks when they are fully convinced with a technology-regardless of its simplicity or complexity.
