Influence of plant and manure teas on the growth and yield of straw mushroom (Volvariella volvacea)

This study to determine the influence of various plant and manure teas on the growth and yield of straw mushroom (V. volvacea); and to determine which of the test treatments had the greatest effects on the growth and yield of straw mushroom was conducted employing Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with 14 treatments, replicated three times. This was done at the Department of Plant Pathology, USM at Rio Grande Street, Kabacan, Cotabato from January to February 2012. Highly significant differences were noted in the mean number of days to pinhead formation, number of harvested buttons, yield (g/bed), length (cm) and width (cm) of buttons, stem length (cm) and diameter (cm) and circumference of opened cap of V. volvacea. Ammonium phosphate (synthetic check) and AZ41 (organic check) highly influenced the growth and yield of V. volvacea. Both inorganic check and organic check exhibited the earliest number of days to harvest and had the heaviest weight of buttons and caps. However, SMT-applied beds was found comparable to AZ41 (organic check) - and ammonium phosphate (synthetic check) - applied beds in terms of length and width of buttons, length and diameter of stem and circumference of opened caps. Cost-benefit analysis shows that only ammonium phosphate (synthetic check) gave a positive net profit of Php105.70/bed from among the test treatments used. All other test treatments gave negative net profits compared to the standard check. The application of plant and manure teas did not significantly influence the yield of mushroom hence, poor substitutes to synthetic fertilizer as growth and yield enhancers in mushroom production.
