In unpredictable, highly variable and heterogeneous lowland rice ecosystem multi-environment trials of rice breeding lines is a better option than centralized trial for location specific adaptation and acceptability. In 2011 DS, 380 rice entries were planted in PhilRice CES [Philippine Rice Research Inst. Maligaya, Science City of Muñoz, Nueva Ecija (Philippines). Central Experiment Station] for seed increase. In 2011 WS, 210 selected entries out of 380 were planted in six different regions, which resulted to 86 selected entries. In 2012 WS, the 86 entries were planted in the same locations in alpha lattice design with 3 replications, either transplanted or direct seeded. In PhilRice CES the entries were planted at two times, one-time planting and late planting. In each location, daily rain, standing water depth, water table depth, appearance and disappearance of standing water were recorded. The entries were observed for growth characteristics, yield and phenotypic acceptability. The cropping season, across the sites was characterized with frequent heavy rains during vegetative stage with decreasing trend towards reproductive growth stage. The results indicated that in PhilRice late planting, Batac, and Cagayan, the entries were subjected to terminal drought. Among the locations, PhilRice CES on time planting, Negros and Iloilo appeared with more favorable condition of soil-water environment. Grain yield mean was highest in PhilRice timely planted (3446 average kg/ha), and least in PhilRice CES late planting (1451 kg/ha). Combining both 2011 and 2012 yield data, the environments were identified in three productivity categories viz; 1) yield more than 3000 kg, 2) yield between 2000 and 3000 and yield less than 2000 kg. Based on the entries yield index, 10 entries, were selected within each productivity group and forwarded for adaptability trials in 2013 WS.
