Evaluation of Selected Common Bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) Genotypes Under Residual Moisture Systems of River Nile State
2012
Osman, R.M.
Ten common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) genotypes introduced from CIAT (International Center for Tropical Agriculture) were evaluated in randomized complete block design (RCBD) at Berber Island in River Nile State, Sudan, for two growing seasons (2008/09-2010/011).The material were tested under residual soil moisture(W1) and residual soil moisture, in addition to one supplementary irrigation(W2). The genotypes were evaluated for some breeding aspects; likewise, the correlations between yield, its component and other traits, drought tolerance parameters, phenotypic and genotypic coefficient of variation, heritability, genetic advance and yield stability were determined. The results showed that water regimes, seasons and genotypes had significant effect on most of the measured characters. The genotype Mutwakil gave the highest seed yield under stress conditions (3237and 4050kg/ha), compared to (4343 and 4334 kg/ha) under non stress conditions for the first and second seasons respectively. All characters measured were positive and significantly correlated with seed yield except with number of days to 90% maturity, which was significantly and negatively, correlated. The highest values (2.7and 1.6) of SSI were obtained by the genotypes I-LBl and Starlight, while the highest value (38.6) of GMB was produced by the genotype Mutwakil. The phenotypic and genotypic coefficient of variation was higher for stem length (57, 6 %). The highest values of heritability were (99.7 and 92.9) recorded for stem length and 100-seed weight respectively. High value of genetic advance (830.9) was obtained by seed yield. The genotype that had drought tolerance and high yield stability was NM2656-8A-1. The highest stability and drought tolerance parameters indicated better genotypic adaptation parameters for drought stress an which could be used to improved common bean drought tolerance
