The possibilities of ash and beech growing-up were analysed in dependence on the method of an individual protection of trees. From this point of view, both the height growth and increment as well as browsing damages were analysed considering a particular way of tree protection. Modern progressive methods of an individual tree protection were used in the research (plastic tube shields and plastic spirals). Chemical repellents (Cervacol Extra, Lentacol, Stop Z) were tested as well. The statistical analysis showed that no significant differences in efficiency of repellents were found. Moreover, some negative effects of repellents on tree growth and tree health status were found in some cases. On the other hand, means of the individual tree protection used in the research stimulated greatly the height growth particularly in broad-leaved trees which was comparable to that in game-proof fences without game access. Using repellents against game browsing in the most attractive trees is pointless. The individual mechanical protection of trees is more economical comparing to the chemical protection considering not only faster tree growing-up and better tree health status, but also a money-saving. Apart from that, it is a need to take an ecological staindpoint into account which is important with regard to both the nature conservation and environment. Principles of young forest stands protection in the conditions of the School Forest Enterprise of the Technical University in Zvolen were proposed based on comparative experiments using means of an individual tree protection. It is possible to modify these findings also under other conditions of a forest management to achieve an optimal solution of ecological. economical and technical problems of tree prevention against red deer browsing.
