The genus Tagetes species are one of the most commonly cultivated annual plants in the world. They have wide range of application on the market. For instance, they are used in cosmetics, in the pharmaceutical industry or for ornamental purposes. In Bulgaria Tagetes is used mainly for planting gardens and parks. The enrichment of the species assortment is always necessary for the ornamental horticulture. For this purpose the creation of new varieties of plants is highly recommended. They have more compact habit, larger blossoms and diverse shade colours and structure. The Bulgarian Tagetes variety Usmivka is created at the Institute of Ornamental plants – Sofia. It is registered in the national list of plant sorts in 2012. The variety Usmivka belongs to the plant sort Tagetes patula L. It has a compact structure and large blossom. The raceme is a combined inflorescence type, whose capitulum features tubular flowerets and ray flowerets in 2: 1 ratio. Тhe tint is light orange in colour and the flowering season is of early to mid-early type. It is suitable for shaping flower figures, kerb stones and various decorative containers.
