Inglés. Since beginning of 1990-ies, when Latvia regained its independence, technological possibilities and production capacities of primary wood processing companies has been increasing year by year. Therefore question about availability of wood resources and their utilization in the level that secures sustainability of whole forest sector, is becoming more and more topical. It is forecasted that in the future import of round wood will not increase and development of Latvian wood processing sector should be based on utilization of local timber resources. Main tasks of the project are to evaluate availability of round wood resources, their current utilization volumes and dynamics, structure of processed round wood, assortment of production and geographical location of primary wood processing companies. To fulfil these tasks, the monitoring of Latvian primary wood processing companies was carried out in years 2009, 2011 and 2013. During result analysis companies were divided into groups according to their annual round wood production volumes: large (above 50’001 m3 annually), middle (10’001-50’000 m**3 annually), small (1’001-10’000 m3 annually) and micro (below 1’000 m3 annually). For evaluation of the round wood utilization balance in the territory of Latvia, on the one hand, data from the questionnaire of primary woodworking companies were supplemented with data form analysis of external trade of forest industry and data of firewood usage in Latvia according to Central Statistical Bureau of Latvia. On the other hand sustainable timber cutting volumes in the territory of Latvia were taken.
