A dry period is the main factor affecting cow udder health and milk productivity in the next lactation. The aim of this study was to assess how the length of a dry period affects the productivity and milk quality of dairy cows. In this study the data of the Agricultural Data Centre on 84 dairy cows (34 Latvian brown and 50 Holstain black and white cows) from one farm were used, which had at least 4th lactation. The data regarding the dry period length was distributed in 3 different groups. The highest milk yield in the next lactation – 6801.2 kg – was obtained from cows with the average dry period length of 53.9 days. Milk productivity gradually increased until the 4th lactation in cows with average first dry period length of 64.6 days. The highest milk fat and protein content was from cows with the first dry period length of 0–20 days. The highest milk fat and protein content (4.16% and 3.45%) was obtained in cow group where the first dry period was shorter than 45 days. In this cow group the tendency was evident until the 4th lactation.
