This paper highlighted the outcome of the 9th Malaysia Plan research programme of Freshwater Fisheries Research Centre (FFRC) in its effort to conserve freshwater fishes in Peninsular Malaysia. Both in situ and ex situ approaches were used in the studies. The in situ approaches implemented in this study included establishing of the restricted areas, closed season, limiting access to fisheries and restocking efforts at selected stretches of rivers. The ex situ conservation via sperm cryopreservation on selected indigenous species was also highlighted. Generally, results of these conservation approaches have contributed significantly to guide management practices for both short and long term conservation of the threatened and endangered freshwater fish species in Malaysia.
