Modified physical refining (MPR) of palm oil environmental, economic and quality benefits
2001
Bravo, C.A.
The objective of the refining process is to produce a high quality oil by selective, efficient and cost effective adsorption of impurities such as phosphatides, associated trace metals, colour bodies and products. Modified physical refining (MPR) can be used to obtain superior qualtiy finished product while reducing adsorbent usage and operating cost. Commercial practice using silica in conjuction with clay (MPR and/or sequencial addition) confirmed increased fractionation rate. Both, olein yield and filtration rate improved. Cloud point and solid fat content (NMR) confirms the superior quality of final product. The result was higher processing rates and higher valued product.
