Road safety is a complex issue. To achieve satisfactory it is essential to have a through knowledge of basic facts including road infrastructure, accident, highway and road traffic data. Using such data it is possible to investigate the underlying principles relating to the occurence of various types of accidents and to develop standards which incorporate safety measures into the design of roads. Also, it will help to identify and treat those components of the transportation system which result in the effective improvements in road safety. Transport planners and road safety engineers can now use the GIS technology to analyse quantitavely accidents trends and profiles with greater ease and accuracy. This paper describes the establishment of a road safety information system developed on MAPINFO and ARC/INFO. The study includes a number of phases: establishment of a national centre for accident databaseintegration of database into ARC/INFOroad physical data and digitised locations of the road systemanalysis definition and development of GIS-based application modules to road safety and management.
