Cellulose recovery is usually done by aerobic lignin degradation process using fungus. This work reports on the cellulose recovery by anaerobic lignin degradation process from banana stem waste by mixed culture. The process was carried out at ambient temperature in 20-L bioreactor by varying the organic loading rate (OLR) and hydraulic retention time (HRT) in the range between 1-7 g TS/L.d and 3-15 days, respectively. By using the experimental design approach, the optimum conditions obtained were 5.8 g TS/L.d and 12.5 d. The lignin content was reduced from 15% to 7.37% which contribute to the increment of cellulose from 55% to 66.2%. The results generated have proven that the cellulose recovery could be achieved by anaerobic lignin degradation process by mixed culture.
