Modification of Gutta percha (Palaquium oblongifolium) resin (natural trans-1, 4-isoprene rubber) (TIR Guta percha) with 5% maleic anhydride (MAH) was done in the kneader (Toyo Seiki Labo-Plastomill). The resulted product MAH-modified-TIR so called MTIR was used as adhesive for plywood manufacturing. The veneer used was Keruing wood (Dipterocarpus spp) with the moisture content in the range of 4-6%. The MTIR, veneer and plywood properties under various glue spreads ranging from 175 to 250g/m2 were evaluated. In the spectrum of MTIR after purification in which unreacted of MAH was removed, the peak at 1716cm-1 existed, indicated the characteristic for C=0 of MAH. Differential thermal analysis showed that before and after modification the melting and the decomposition temperature of TIR Gutta percha was quite different indicate that chemical modification of TIR Gutta percha with MAH occured.Modification of TIR Gutta percha with MAH resulted in improvement of the plywood quality i.e, increasing the shear strength and wood failure values.MTIR prepared from both TIR Gutta percha is thermoplastics like and can be used as interior and exterior plywood adhesive.
