Utilisation of small diameter logs of Acacia hybrid, Azadirachta excelsa and Tectona grandis for oriented strand board manufacture

A comprehensive study was carried out to determine the feasibility of using thinning residues from Malaysian forest plantation species for oriented strand board (OSB) manufacture. In these studies, small diameter logs obtained from the first thinning exercise of Acacia hybrid, Azadirachta excelsa and Tectona grandis were obtained from various plantation plots and processed of OSB manufacture. A total of 27 pieces OSB was manufactured at a combination of various target density 550, 650 and 750 kg/m3 and resin level of 3, 5 and 7%. The study indicated a promising result to make use of juvenille tree, which normally discarded during thinning exercise for wood composite manufacture especially for OSB. All boards were tested according to European Standards for bending strength, modulus of elasticity, tensile strength perpendicular to plane of board, thickness swelling after 24 hours immersion in water and water absorption. Generally, the study revealed the important characteristic of OSB manufactured from these plantation species at various combinations of density and resin level. Majority of the boards comply with the standard value of OSB as specified by European Standard specifications for OSB (BS EN 300:1994) except for internal bond and thickness swelling of certain resin content and board density which may need further improvement.
