In course of the research there were studied the results of studies of authors, as well as research and production experience in the cultivation of the most important legume for the conditions of the Republic of Belarus - alfalfa (Medicago sativa L). Research was realized in the conditions of the Republic of Belarus in 1978-2008. As a result of realized research there were considered the history of the introduction and cultivation of crops in the Republic of Belarus, its biological features and technology of cultivation in different agro-ecological conditions, formation of grass alfalfa under the influence of microbiological preparations, the vertical structure of alfalfa grass, formation of the root system, the biochemical composition of green mass, energy and food value grass, the chemical composition of the roots of alfalfa, alfalfa productivity and depending on the timing and use of microbe-plant drugs interaction. It was found that alfalfa crop is among the highly productive forage plants in the north-eastern part of the Republic of Belarus, capable of providing crop dry mass of 100 or more tons per 1 ha, which corresponds to a yield of exchange energy of the order of 102 GJ/ha. Energy value of 1 kg of dry matter of alfalfa - over 9 MJ metabolizable energy, saturation feed unit digestible protein is 208-212 g/f.u. with the necessary security 105-120 g/f.u.
